Konsul Søren Falch og øyenlege Sigurd Falchs fond for medisinsk vitenskap deler hvert år ut en juniorpris og en seniorpris til forskere innen medisin som har utmerket seg spesielt. Fondet finansierer også en årlig gjesteforelesning.
Årets Falch-forelesning holdes av professor Jakub Abramson fra The Weizmann Institute of Science. Abramson har på få år markert seg som en av de absolutt ledende i immunologisk forskning. I en rekke banebrytende arbeider har han vist hvordan proteinet autoimmun regulator (AIRE) er en viktig for utvikling av sentral immunologisk toleranse i tymus og hvordan brudd på denne toleransen fører til autoimmun sykdom.
Med utgangspunkt i kliniske problemstillinger har Abramson ved hjelp av avanserte musemodeller og pasientmaterialer kartlagt nye sykdomsmekanismer blant annet hvordan autoimmunitet disponerer for kroniske candidainfeksjoner og hvordan immunsystemet kan ødelegge tannemaljen. Falch Lecture
This year’s Falch Lecture is held by Professor Jakub Abramson. He has emerged as an eminent figure in the field of immunology. Through a series of pioneering studies, he has elucidated the critical role of the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) protein in fostering central immunological tolerance within the thymus, as well as the implications of disruptions in this tolerance for autoimmune diseases.
Leveraging clinical challenges as a springboard, Abramson has skillfully employed sophisticated mouse models in tandem with analyses of patient cohorts and biological samples to unveil novel disease mechanisms. His research has shed light on the connection between autoimmunity and an increased susceptibility to chronic candida infections, as well as the potential for the immune system to compromise tooth enamel integrity.
