The Semmelweis Medical Linguistics Conference (SMLC) continues to welcome abstract submissions. Please find attached the 2nd call for papers, featuring an extended deadline.
The SMLC has become a cornerstone of academic discourse in healthcare communication. Last year, the conference welcomed participants from all continents, providing a global platform for the exchange of knowledge and innovative ideas. This year, we aim to further broaden participation, both in-person and online, to foster an even more inclusive and diverse academic dialogue. The hybrid event, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation, is designed to bring together scholars, researchers, and educators working in healthcare communication, with thematic emphases on patient-centred communication, medical translation and interpreting, terminology, pragmatics, artificial intelligence, metaphors, speech analysis, medical documentation, and languages for specific purposes.
We invite presentations, poster sessions, and workshops addressing these themes. Special attention is given to fostering collaboration between senior and junior researchers, PhD candidates, and students. A highlight of this year’s program is the unique opportunity for participants to engage directly with leading experts in the field through workshops, facilitating exchanges that bridge academic and professional practice.

The calls for proposals will open in late January 2025. Deadline for a short proposal is in March 2025 and a full proposal by September 2025.
Stiftelsen KG Jebsen har annonsert en ny utlysning for sentre for medisinsk forskning (søknadsfrist 8 mai, kl. 12:00, 2025). Stiftelsen sier at de vil opprette 2 nye sentre i denne runden.
Ifølge stiftelsens bestemmelser får region vest – UiB og HUS sende inn fire søknader til stiftelsen. Vi må derfor ha en prekvalifiseringsrunde for å velge ut de fire initiativene som inviteres til full søknad. I samarbeid med HUS har fakultetet utarbeidet en mal for prekvalifiseringsrunden som skal brukes av alle søkere (vedlagt). Søknadsmalen tar utgangspunkt i de som brukes av stiftelsen (se utlysningen). Vi oppfordrer sterkt til å lese all informasjon som ligger på stiftelsen sine hjemmesider i arbeidet med skissen til prekvalifiseringsrunden, og påpeker spesielt at utlysningen gjelder translasjonell forskning. I stiftelsens utlysningstekst finner dere mer informasjon om hvordan de definerer «translasjonell».
For prosjekter der fakultetet er prosjekteier, og hvor minst 70% av tildelte midler regnskapsførers på fakultetet, bidrar fakultetet med 2 ph.d.-stillinger (2 x 3 år).

4. Prekvalifiseringssøknader som ikke bruker oppgitt mal eller som mangler vedlegg, eller som kommer inn etter fristen, vil ikke bli vurdert.
5. Søknadene som har kommet inn i prekvalifiseringsrunden vil bli evaluert av et felles eksternt panel i perioden 4-26. mars.
6. Informasjon om hvilke prosjekter som går videre til andre runde, dvs til full søknad til stiftelsen, vil bli annonsert så snart som mulig etter 26. mars.
7. 8. mai 2025 (12:00): Endelig søknadsfrist til stiftelsen.

The KG Jebsen Foundation has announced a new call for Centers for Medical Research (application deadline: May 8, 2025, at 12:00).
The foundation has stated that two new centers will be established in this round.
According to the foundation’s regulations, the Western Region of Norway – UiB and HUS – may submit together four applications to the foundation. Consequently, a prequalification round is required to select the four initiatives that will be invited to submit full applications. In collaboration with HUS, the faculty has developed a template for the prequalification round, which all applicants are required to use (attached). The application template is based on the one used by the foundation, which you can find in the announcement. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review all information available on the foundation’s website when preparing their prequalification draft. It should be noted that the call pertains to translational research. Further information on how the foundation defines «translational» can be found in the announcement text.
For projects where the faculty is the project owner, and at least 70% of the allocated funds are accounted for by the faculty, the faculty will provide support in the form of two PhD positions (2 x 3 years).
Applicants must adhere to the following deadlines throughout the process (individual departments/divisions may set additional deadlines):
February 10, 2025: The coordinator (PI) of the application must register the planned project, including the project title (or preliminary title) and the name of the PI. This registration is mandatory. Register via this link: https://forms.office.com/e/pE3ArwmFqL
In accordance with the hosting agreement between UiB and Helse Bergen, as well as the guidelines of the KG Jebsen Foundation, projects must be anchored at the institution where the PI holds their primary position.
Prequalification applications that do not use the specified template, are missing attachments, or are submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
The prequalification applications will be evaluated by a joint external panel between March 4 and March 26, 2025.
Information regarding which projects will proceed to the second round (i.e., full applications to the foundation) will be announced as soon as possible after March 26, 2025.

The call is targeted starting group leaders with ambitious projects within endocrinology and metabolism that aim to understand the human organism and the mechanisms underlying health and disease at a basic and clinical level. Four grants are available for funding and NNF aims at awarding at least one of these grants to an active clinician researcher.

MSCA Staff Exchanges involve organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors (including SMEs) from across the globe.
Support is provided for international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary mobility of R&I staff, leading to knowledge transfer between participating organisations.
Staff exchanges fund short-term international and inter-sectoral exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities of participating organisations. The aim is to develop sustainable collaborative projects between different organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors. Exchanged staff benefit from new knowledge, skills and career development perspectives, while participating organisations increase their research and innovation capacities.
Success rate in the 2023 call was approximately 30%.

Persontilpasset medisin – farmakogenomikk
Utlysningen (JTC2025) vil finanisere forskning innenfor human helse på farmakogenomiske strategier for persontilpasset medisin. Konsortiene må være transnasjonale, tverrfaglige og transsektorielle.
Utlysningen dekker forskning innenfor alle sykdomsgrupper.
Beløp Forskningsrådet deltar med: 1, 5 millioner Euro. Minimums- maksimumsbeløp dere kan søke: 200 000 – 300 000 Euro, ev. inntil 400 000 Euro dersom norsk forsker er koordinator.

The course will also present and discuss what is good research communication.
Even with the introduction of AI, there is something to learn for all of us! We strongly encourage students at all levels, including postdocs, to prioritize this and attend! Senior staff are also very welcome. The seminar is also open to national and Nordic visitors.

Snart er 2025 klar for avgang, og jeg vil benytte anledningen til takke dere alle for en flott innsats for K1 i året som har gått. Vi har i 2024 oppnådd masse spennende innen både forskning og undervisning. Vi har publiser flotte artikler, fått mange priser og oppnådd store nasjonale og internasjonale tildelinger samtidig som vi har opprettholdt meget god kvalitet på undervisningen.
Like barn leker best
Det gleder meg å se de gode samarbeidet med våre kolleger i Stavanger. Snart skal vi knytte tettere bånd med kolleger i Førde. Og da gjenstår bare Haugesund før vi har en komplett vestlandslege, med autorisasjon, stetoskop og det hele. Vi går med andre ord spennende tider i møte. Det som er positivist er at dette ikke bare vil styrke undervisning, men også forskning på tvers av sykehusene.
Det siste året har vi gjennom undervisning og forskning knyttet enda sterkere bånd med K2, ofte omtalt som «K3». Sammen med IBM har vi også startet et fellesskap innen stamcelleforskning som vil jobbe tett med forskere ved IKO og sykehuset.
Vi er med på å bygge framtiden
Det fleste studentene er nå ferdige med sine eksamener og mange er allerede snart klare for LIS1-stillinger. Tusen takk til hele undervisning seksjonen, og alle andre involverte, for all planlegging og tilrettelegging – og ikke minst en godt gjennomført OSKE12. Det går meg ikke hus forbi hvor mye innsats dere legger ned. Dette er svært viktig for at vi skal kunne tilby best mulig kvalitet for våre studenter.
Ja de penga…
Den økonomiske virkeligheten er og vil fortsatt være en stor utfordring for K1. Vi kan dessverre ikke erstatte fullt ut ledige stillinger, ennå. Vi må derfor ikke gi oss med å arbeide så godt som mulig, med de ressursene vi har, samtidig som vi fortsetter å få inn nye forskningsmidler, også i 2025.
Men før vi kommer så langt, er det enda viktigere at vi setter av tid med de vi er glade i, og at vi får slappet godt av. Jeg håper alle får en riktig fin jul, ønsker dere alt godt for neste år.

The University of Bergen offers support for early-stage innovation projects through UiB Idé. The next application deadline is 14 February 2025. Early-stage innovation projects should have the potential to address a need or contribute to societal benefit, have the potential for value creation, and the potential for scalability/becoming available to specific users or society. Projects can come from any academic discipline.
